FELLOWSHIP SELECTION PROCESS
ELIGIBILITY The David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship is open to students graduating in the Spring of 2012 with a minimum of a masters degree in any discipline, field or profession.
Individuals who do not possess previous health policy experience in Washington, D.C. will be given preference.
The Fellowship is open to graduate students in any program, school or department of a college or university that is a Full or Associate Candidate Member of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.
Each department within an eligible college or university may nominate one individual for consideration by the selection committee. For more information please see our brochure.
APPLICATION PROCESS Application materials should be submitted directly to AUPHA by the Department Chair, who will forward one nomination to AUPHA. Applicants should submit the following information to their Department Chair:
1. A resume.
2. A statement of interest that details your motivation for a career in health policy and a description of what you hope to gain from the Fellowship, and how your experiences and education will complement the David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship. The statement should not exceed 1,200 words.
3. Three letters of recommendation; one from the Dean, Director, or Chair of the program, department, or school in which you are enrolled; one from a current or former supervisor, employer or preceptor and one from an individual who is knowledgeable about your academic and/or leadership experience.
4. Academic transcripts (both undergraduate and graduate). Transcripts may be photocopies and need not be sent through the university. However, a key to interpret coding on transcripts must accompany the transcript that do not use the A-F grading format.
5. A synopsis of your past and current extracurricular and volunteer activities in the community and on campus. Do not exceed 1 page.
THE SELECTION PROCESS The person responsible for making the Fellowship nomination is your Department Chair. Your Department Chair must receive your application by October 21, 2011. No applications or supporting materials will be accepted after this date. Your Department Chair will make a selection from the applicants in your Department and forward the nomination to AUPHA by November 4, 2011.
The National Selection Committee will invite several nominees to Washington, D.C., for an interview on January 26, 2012. The Fellowship offer will be extended the same day.
The Selection Committee is particularly interested in: · Evidence of interest in a career to which a health policy experience will contribute · An academic record which reflects breadth and scholarship · Evidence of resourcefulness and self-reliance · Evidence of leadership · Evidence of community involvement · Evidence of maturity · An understanding of the unique philosophy of the David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship · Overall quality of application Package
SCHEDULE The Fellowship will begin in June 2012, and end 12-16 months later. The Fellow is expected to complete the full 12-16 month Fellowship.
